How bank bonuses work

A bank pays a cash bonus for opening an account and meeting a requirement — usually receiving a set amount in direct deposits, or maintaining a balance, within a qualifying window. The bonus is paid weeks or months after you qualify.

What to check before opening

  • Whether the account has a monthly fee once the promotional period ends.
  • Whether your employer's payroll counts as a qualifying direct deposit.
  • Whether you have held an account with that bank recently — most offers exclude recent customers.
  • That the offer is available in your state; availability varies widely.

Tax treatment

Bank account bonuses are taxable interest income. The bank issues a 1099-INT or 1099-MISC for the amount, so budget for the tax on anything sizeable.
